DISCIPLESHIP YEAR
The Discipleship Year is a fantastic opportunity to serve the church and discover more about God's calling on your life.
Now in its ninth year, DY runs from September through to July.
In a typical week, the disciples spend 3 days a week in the workplace, to pay the bills; have one day off; and volunteer for the rest of their time at Trent Vineyard, serving in a wide variety of ways.
The focus of the year is on community and character development so it's not for the faint hearted! Our aims are to;
- Grow closer to God.
- Grow in knowledge of God.
- Grow in gifting.
- Grow in servant heartedness.
- Grow in character.
- Grow in experience.
There are tremendous opportunities throughout the year to get more involved in the inner workings of the church. The disciples regularly assist the admin office, they serve the poor at the Arches and through other poor ministries, and serve at most of our Sunday services.
As well as helping with many of the unseen, unglamorous jobs (like cleaning, car parking and chair layout) disciples are also actively encouraged to get involved with people they have passion and vision for, whether the poor and disadvantaged, youth or children, or welcoming newcomers.
One of the most exciting aspects of the DY is the unique dynamic of growing within community. To paraphrase an oft-quoted verse, "As steel sharpens steel, so one disciple sharpens another". Every Friday we spend time together worshipping, learning more about God and ourselves, praying together and serving side by side.
We have seen that it is through the hard work of serving when tired and loving when we're at the end of ourselves that God draws us close, challenges us and transforms us. The DY has been described as a rollercoaster ride with God. Rather than being a neatly packaged, spoon-fed program, the year is better described as a buffet-style meal. We provide all the food and spread it out, but it's the responsibility of each disciple to grab a plate and tuck in!
